The 5th was my first assignment out of Keesler back in '77. I was trying to remember when we went to Jack Frost, I believe back in '79. I was apart of the TWS-7 team. Great times and the best unit.

I arrived at the 5th MOB out of Comm. School as a 2nd Lt. in February 1966. My sponsor was Lt. Peter Collins. The commander at that time was Col. Billy J. Millis who to this day is one of the finest individuals I've ever met. I was assigned to the Maintenance Division reporting to Maj. Elden Boothby. My first assignment was to compile the maintenance portion of the Group's Exercise Planning Guide which I never would have been able to do without the outstanding support from Sgt. Tatlow. I remained in the 5th MOB until April of 1969. My last 5th MOB assignment was Branch Chief Base Comm. Maintenance. While in that assignment I had the privilege of working with Senior Master Sergeant Robert Heaberlin who also to this day remains one of the finest individuals I've ever met. I look back on my assignment in the 5th MOB with the fondest of memories. The spirit and dedication within the organization was unbelievable. I often feel if the 5th MOB I remember could run the country today; we would be in a lot better shape. I would also be remiss if I didn't comment on the outstanding support the organization received from the civilian tech. reps. Bob Smith who was a Philco-Ford rep at the time was a mainstay of the organization. When I look in the Memorial section of this site I'm saddened to see so many names with whom I served while in the MOB. Pappy Oates was a special person and will be missed. Capt. Al Morgan was a close friend of mine and Col. Solomon was the Commander when I left the organization. I’m proud to be an alumnus of the 5th Mobile Comm. Group! Later Gators.

From the "Back Forty" training area (burying the deuces)to Key West to Angels Peak to the Egyptian Desert (Proud Phantom), the 5th was top dog in the rotation during my tour back in '79 to '81. Loved it! Learned a lot and it served me well till I retired in 89. Hello to all the "Mobsters".
