I stopped at a WWII building to ask directions and was met by a Major and a Captain. When I asked where the 5th Mobile Comm Group was, they replied, "You're looking at it". The major was Major Goldfain, the interim commander and the captain was Capt Morgan, the supply officer. I converted to DOD civilian in 1966 and remained in the 5th until I retired in 1994. I started out in the AFETS program but was placed in charge of the group's Engineering Division by Col Livengood in 1982. Lots of fond memories with the 5th.

I learned more in the air force than I ever did anywhere else; you are the only guys (and gals!) I ever got any respect from; I really miss it. I had a tour in Greece and Griffis; my 1st marriage went down the tubes and 911 really hit home; I wanted to get back in so bad; and now with all this going on in Iraq, I wish I was with you; all that desert training I had could have paid off; now it is you all who are fighting for my freedom; GOD bless the 5th and all our service people!

200303262008063!|!Linda Hanson (Uniatowski)!|!uniatowski@charter.net!|!I stumbled upon RAFB's web site today (3/26/03) while looking at CNN's war coverage web page (military aircraft). What a pleasant surprise to see an "alumni" of the 5th MOB! My husband, Philip D. Hanson, and I met in July 1973 in the MOB. He was my "trainer" for my 5-level (29353). As I understood it, I was the FIRST ENLISTED female airman stationed at Robins. There were quite a few just a couple of months after I arrived, but the only other female WAF in the MOB (at that time) was a married woman (if I remember correctly, her name was Nancy Nance, and no, I am not making that up). Her husband was getting an early out because his career field dealing with "hound dog" missles was in the process of being phased out. I do not see any personnel registered in your guestbook from the 1970s, so thought I would sign in.
Phil and I married in October 1976; two weeks to the day that we were to go my home for the ceremony, Phil got orders for Incirlik, AFB, Turkey for a 13-month unaccompanied tour. Because the AF is the best of the military branches, I was able to join him the following month, and we went on a sponsored, two-year tour. It helped to be young and stupid: this was on the heels of the Turk-Greek war on Cypress and everyone told us we could not have picked a WORSE time to be stationed there. I think considering the current times, it was probably the BEST time to be stationed there. In those days (seems like a dream now), we could not call our mommies and daddies when things were rough. We had to stick it out with just each other. This October, we will celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary. I credit being stuck at Incirlik those nearly two years for that! We really did grow up and shape up in those two years. How I wish I was not so damn old now: I would love to go back there and do it all over again, even if I had to be by myself. To this day, I NEVER turn on a light switch or flush a toilet without being grateful for being a c

I thank the 5th for giving me the public speaking and leadership experience that set me up for success as a clinical educator. Finishing my Masters next year and I find it hard to believe so much time has flown by since retiring. Lots of great people in the "Mob" and I'm proud to have been a part of the history of such an outstanding organization. See ya at the reunion!
200303270626164!|!Andy Majka!|!andymajka@cox.net!|!I had 3 seperate assignments with the 5th
July 1980 to August 1981 assigned to the QRP
August 1982 to April 1985 again with the QRP
September 1986 to August 1990 started with QC and ended up in deployment plans
The 2 breaks 81 to 82 and 85 to 86 were assignments to Turkey - I just considered them a extended deployment.
I worked for and with a great many of folks in the 5th that would be too many to mention.
Going thru the guest book both the old one that was lost and the new one brings back many fond memories of the 5th.
I will make every effort to see you in May.

200303271006404!|!Richard T. Gillis, aka, Dick, RT, Mr G (USAF & Civil Service Retired)!|!rtgillis@cox.net!|!If you ain't MOB, you ain't.....been a member of the BEST of the BEST.....Having said that, how do I know? I don't claim to be an expert, however, I believe experience to be one of the worlds best teachers. Having served in fixed comm with AACS, ADC. SAC, and USAFE for 12 years, my most rewarding service was the 14 years I served in Mobile/Combat Comm with various units: 1st MOB, Johnson AB Japan; 2nd MOB, Sembach AB and Lindsey AS Germany and Patrick AFB Florida; 5th MOB Robins AFB Georgia; 231st MOB (DCANG) Camp Simms Washington DC; 601st TCS (same green trucks and vans) Neu Ulm Germany. Those 26 years were followed by over 17 more as a civilian with the 5th MOB. Being in the MOB can be likened to serving on a Naval vessel. When there is a fire aboard ship, you don't call the Fire Department...YOU ARE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. In the MOB when the circuits and equipment fail you don't call the Telephone Company...YOU ARE THE TELEPHONE COMPANY. The men and women of combat comm, in all disciplines (AFSC's), learn to work together as a fine tuned team to always make it work. It ain't MAJIC, it is the result of knowing your JOB and doing it well....LET'S GO.....

There were 43 of us right out of tech school and a big rotation from overseas at the same time. It was chaos. Hardly ever saw the inside of a van, but we were farmed out to the rest of the base for details such as motorized trash pick up, playing dead on the flightline, school crossing guard(man those kids were mean), deployment slave, cleaning keroseene stoves for one solid week with presently banned solvents, climbing inside of water buffalos and scrubbing it out with CLOROX, and my favorite guarding SMART field with a perfectly good M16 that had no bullets. ***The friends I made and the people I met made the place*** The movie Animal House was a tame depiction of the 5th mob barracks life. I apologize to all the TTY, Radio, and tech controller folks that had to put up with the HATS OFF inspections. 1st shirt, Bill Northener, thought I was a civilian breaking into a barracks room, because my hair was so long. the routing indicator book up to date. During these years we
deployed to Ft Campbell and Ft. Bragg, Eglin Field 9, Seymour Johnson,
and Nellis. It was just my luck, I had volunteered to go to Mtn.
Home on a manpower assist when the Las Vegas assignment came down.
Col. Madeira (I believe) was the CO at that time. I came down to
the dedication of Ch-3 67-14703 in June 03, and didn't recognize
much in Warner Robins or Robins AFB. There were four Tsgts at the
dedication, and I don't remember Tsgts looking so young thirty-two
years ago. Those men did a wonderful job restoring that bird.

200608042303105!|!SSgt .Russell A. Hamilton!|!roostaman_2000@yahoo.com!|!I was in the "Mob" from Dec 1979 until Oct 1981. MSgt. Dave Wilcoxson was my superintendent, kept my butt in line and inspired me to go as far as possible. He was sharp as a saber. I never knew that a healthy strike could be so unhealthy! I often wonder what the 5th is like these days with computers being so advanced. I bet they don't have the torn tape relay van anymore! I came to the 5th Mob direct duty, but learned quickly and left for Germany as an A1C. I went to HQ USAFE in Ramstein and really applied alot of what I learned into a "real world never a dull moment" environment. I made alot of friends in the MOB and would like to get in touch with them again. Maybe I'll make one of those reunions some day. Here's to Pope, Nededog, Wade, and all my other fellow mobsters, including those before and after me.

Worked with a great crew of men, and enjoyed that tour greatly. A remote assignment froced me to go before the Medical Board [ I only had five back surgeries on my record. I can't figure out why I didn't made the remote assignment.] LOL: and thus a medical retirement. It took several years to adjust to civilian life.

I read all of the guestbook entries and it sure brought back some pleasant memories from the 85-890 timeframe, as well as Desert Shield/Storm. Col Burge, in all of my 23 years in the AF you were the best CC I ever had. Too long a list, but to all of you widebanders out there here is a big "LET'S GO!" The same for all of my friends in the other shops/work centers. We were a team. 200802211824244!|!Ronny W. (Ron) Stringer!|!rstringer@cfl.rr.com!|!Hi Folks...just found this site and looked over the lists and guestbook entries and saw some people I remember as well as a bunch I don't. I was a Tech Controller with the 5th from Oct 79 to Dec 80 and again from Jan 82 to Aug 84. Most of the second tour I was incarcerated over at deployment plans under Lt Col Gentle with Capt Carroll, Capt Trudeau, Lt (now Col) Deidre Briggs (Snow), the infamous SMSgt Charlie Messer and a host of other assorted denizens whose sole purpose in life was to find places to send mobsters!!
We succeeded quite too well most of the time, I think... The "crowning" jewel occurrance was when Capt Carroll told me once that I wrote the comm plan, I knew the van, I had been in touch with all the other units communicators and if the plan didn't work I could MAKE it work...so if he went on a deployment--I was going too. The only problem was (drum roll please) he went on ALL of them as a deployed element commander!!! So by the time the guys went on the planned 3-4 week exercise I had ALREADY been TDY 3-4 weeks PLANNING it!!! Then I got to go along on it TOO. I'm not saying things were crazy over there but after Lt Snow met her future husband in the middle of the Egyptian desert she would get flowers delivered to the office from him...which she would gladly share with the rest of us...nice arrangements...very romantic...I can't understand why she stopped sharing them with me...after all, I only ate one petal!!!! I wonder if she still remembers that?
AAAHHHH, the life and times of a mobster! I retired as a MSgt in '93 after 24 years and having served in 2 mobs, 2 TACS outfits in Germany, several stints as NCOIC and Superintendent of fixed stations and even some aircraft ECM maintenance time. I can say without a doubt and with no hesitation whatsoever that my time in the 5th was the absolute best service I ever had. I would like to thank all of the people I mentioned before for allowing me to serve with the
